Scuba & Marine Sports
North Carolina is nicknamed The Graveyard of the Atlantic, owing to its proximity to two centuries worth of shipwrecks. While most of the older sites have rotted away to a few planks, many wrecks from the last 80 years or so are still in good condition and have become artificial reefs, hosting thousands of creatures in micro ecosystems ripe for exploration.
GSD Sports offers professional trained Dive Masters, Instructors, and Contract Captains to meet your marine adventuring goals. Whether diving through a wreck or camping on private islands, our guides are ready and willing. Best of all, where most of the Wilmington dive community shuts down for the winter, we’re a year-round operation.
Private Charters - Scuba, fishing, spear fishing, island camping
Through partnerships with local captains, we’re able to host private charters of 1-4 persons (not including the captain and the GSD Dive Master or Adventure Guide). The benefits of a smaller operation is that we can easily go out significantly further to dive sites that become too expensive for the larger vessels to ride out to. We are willing to head out anywhere but some of the most popular sites are shown below. We are able to facilitate most types of dives including:
night dives
deep dives/nitrox
technical dives
wreck dives
spear fishing dives

About 90 feet down with about 40 feet of visibility, the Hyde is an especially popular Wilmington dive site. Recently the tower collapsed but the wreck is otherwise still intact.
The Coast Guard Station turned private hotel is not necessarily a dive site itself, but an icon of the area with many great dive and fishing sites near by.
Located about 30 miles from the shore, the tower reaches down to the floor only about 100 feet below. The whole area is underwater shoal with a depth in the 100s making for a great place to do some deep dives without needing to get too deep and technical.
The hotel is not open to the public, but if you know a guy who knows a guy…
You can’t talk about Wilmington diving without talking about Megalodon teeth. While many thousands have been collected over the years, there are still many more of these incredible teeth located at the limits of recreational diving.
These palm-sized treasures are truly something to behold. Just imagine how big the fish was.
